Beginner Spanish
(CEFR A1-A2)
First-Year University Spanish, Fully Standards-Aligned and Open Access
This project is a modern, first-year university Spanish Open Educational Resource (OER) designed to provide students and instructors with a complete, academically rigorous alternative to commercial beginner textbooks. Built for accessibility, flexibility, and long-term sustainability, the resource delivers the full range of grammar, communication, and cultural foundations expected in an introductory postsecondary Spanish sequence.
Comprehensive First-Year Grammar and Communication Foundations
The OER introduces students to the essential structures of Spanish through a communicative, proficiency-based approach. Learners build a strong grammatical foundation while developing the ability to understand, speak, read, and write about everyday topics with increasing confidence.
Key first-year content includes:
- Present tense verbs (regular and irregular)
- Ser and estar, and core descriptive structures
- Gender, number agreement, and noun/adjective usage
- Reflexive verbs and daily routines
- Direct and indirect object pronouns
- Commands and common interpersonal expressions
- Preterit and imperfect past tenses for narration and description
- Future and progressive constructions
- Comparisons, connectors, and introductory complex sentences
The course emphasizes grammar as a tool for meaningful communication—helping students express personal experiences, describe the world around them, and engage with Spanish-speaking cultures.
Grounded in International and North American Standards
This resource supports ACTFL’s World-Readiness Standards, integrating the core goals of communication, cultural understanding, and real-world language use. By the end of the first-year sequence, students are expected to perform in the Novice High to Intermediate Low range, comparable to CEFR A2, with the ability to:
- participate in basic conversations
- narrate in present and past time frames
- interpret authentic beginner-level texts
- communicate with cultural awareness and accuracy
Modules corresponding to the curriculum are based on existing OERs while identifying gaps and opportunities to insert Canadian components. OERs were created to highlight the Hispanic presence in Canada while at the same time celebrating Canadian achievements, values, and history. The resulting materials are integrated into an aesthetically pleasing platform which is housed by Athabasca University with open access under the Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike license. Access to the full textbook is available here after email registration: Beginner Spanish OER.
Open, Modular, and Designed for University Teaching
Created for adoption in university Spanish programs, this OER is fully open, free to access, and modular in design. Institutions and instructors may adopt the complete sequence or integrate individual units into existing courses, ensuring both academic consistency and local flexibility.
This project reflects a commitment to reducing student costs, expanding access, and supporting high-quality, standards-based Spanish language learning through open education.
This open resource is constantly being updated and we are completing the second half of the first year curriculum. We welcome any additions and contributions from the community to complete this task.
